It was only a matter of time before sparks flew for Ste Hay (Kieron Richardson) and James Nightingale (Gregory Finnegan) following the latter’s return to Hollyoaks and the long-awaited reunion airs next week.
Ste, as viewers know, was absolutely flabbergasted when he discovered that James, who was thought to have perished in a very fiery and seemingly very final car explosion a number of years ago, turned up alive and well.
He wasn’t the only one left reeling either, with viewers having had no idea that James was due back until the jaw-dropping moment hit our screens.
Ste’s world was turned upside down, given that he had laid James to rest and moved on with new flame Rex Gallagher (Jonny Labey), who he previously cheated on James with.
But despite his former flame’s comeback, Ste repeatedly claimed that Rex was the man he wanted to spend his life with, proposing to the mechanic in recent scenes.
Ste, however, has struggled to get his head around Rex’s exploration of his identity. Though he has supported his fiancé in the wake of Froggy Black’s (John Middleton) death this month, more conflict arises next week.
With a meeting with the celebrant on the agenda, Ste is taken aback when Rex says he can’t make it due to working at the garage. The chef decides to go to the meeting alone and praises Rex for being strong in the wake of his granddad’s demise but it soon becomes apparent that Rex isn’t as busy as he’s claimed.
Ro Hutchinson (Leo Cole) lets slip that Rex hasn’t actually been to work since he found out about Froggy, sparking Ste’s interest as he heads to the flat, where he finds his partner dancing in a woman’s blouse.
Ste urges Rex to let him in, pleading with him to explain why he lied about being at work. Later, the two men get passionate at the garage and Ste assures Rex that there is no more hiding.
Ro, meanwhile, encourages Rex to head to Jenson Cole’s (Ryan Clayton) club night in his new look while Ste talks all-things wedding with Sienna Blake (Anna Passey), who finds a blouse down the back of the sofa. Not wanting her to know about Rex’s crossdressing, Ste gets defensive.
Later, at the club night, Rex turns up in a woman’s blouse and Ste is lost for words. Jenson praises the mechanic but Ste takes it the wrong way and lashes out, which results in him winding up at the police station.

Enter James, who turns up to help his ex out of a sticky situation. Ste opens up to the lawyer about not feeling comfortable with Rex’s crossdressing – and it isn’t long before sparks ignite.
Rex, meanwhile, trashes the garage. Ro hears the car alarm sounding and turns up to see an emotional Rex, who reveals all about what happened with Ste at the club. Rex feels alone but Ro assures him that he is not.
Later, Ste heads to Dee Valley Law to see James once again – and it’s not long before they’re kissing as passion ensues.
Elsewhere in the village…
In the wake of the crash on the previous week, tensions are running high. Jack (Jimmy McKenna) for one is on edge as he takes in the distressing scene of his feuding relatives at the hospital.
Jack interrogates Charlie Dean (Charlie Behan), encouraging him to come clean. The police arrive later to quiz the young lad, who is nowhere to be seen. Not having all the facts yet, Nancy Osborne (Jessica Fox) is defensive of Charlie.
As conflicting stories circulate about the crash, Jack must make a decision about who he believes. Will he find himself divided?
Elsewhere, Kathleen-Angel (Naledi Rapotu) refuses to be told what to do by Theresa (Jorgie Porter) after uncovering her past in Japan. On the evening of Jenson’s club night, she offers to look after the Marias so that Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe) and Theresa can attend, in the hopes of securing alone time with Ant (Brook Debio).
At the club night, Sienna fears that Cleo (Nadine Mulkerrin), who is ready to let off some steam, will slip up and reveal anything about what happened to Clare Devine (Gemma Bissix).
