The director of a Stranger Things documentary has shut down fan theories that Season 5 of the popular TV series was created using ChatGPT.
The fan speculation, which has spread on social media platforms like Reddit, arose from a brief clip in the documentary One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, in which some believe show the Duffer brothers had a ChatGPT tab open on their laptop.
Matt and Ross Duffer are the writers, directors and show runners of the Netflix series and appear in the behind the scenes documentary.
In the wake of the online chatter, the documentary's director Martina Radwan spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, shutting down the speculation.
"I mean, are we even sure they had ChatGPT open," Radwan asked the publication.
"There's a lot of chatter where [social media users] are like, 'We don't really know, but we're assuming'," Radwan continued.
Radwan continued with disbelief that this speculation has even arisen.

Radwan added that "nobody has actually proved that [chatGPT] was open".
She added it's like just having your phone next to your computer, all you're doing is using tools and multitasking.
Ultimately, Radwan expressed she feels disheartened by the conversation online surrounding such a well-loved show.
"What I find heartbreaking is everybody loves the show, and suddenly we need to pick it apart."
She then expressed plainly that she did not witness any unethical use of generative-Ai in the writers room.
"I witnessed creative exchanges. I witnessed conversastion," she explained.
"People think 'writers room' means people are sitting there writing. No, it's a creative exchange. It's story development ... I think being in the writers room is suich a privilege and a gift to be able to witness that."
The documentary, which dropped on January 12, offers an "inside look at the production process of Stranger Things 5".
According to the documentary's description, Radwan "spent a full year on set documenting the creation of the final season".
On it's release the final season was met with mixed reviews from fans, with many dissapointed by the result.
"We went into production without having a finished script for the finale," Matt Duffer explained in the documentary about how rushed production had been.
"That was scary because we wanted to get it right. It was the most important script of the season."
