It took Warner Bros. six years and three mega-budget movies that cost nearly $1 billion combined to realize that fans simply aren't that into the Fantastic Beasts franchise. The studio planned to make at least two more installments but wisely cut its losses after the third Fantastic Beasts film emerged as the lowest-grossing installment of J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World franchise. Prequels to generation-defining films have always faced an uphill battle with fans. Look no further than George Lucas' Star Wars prequel trilogy, Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy, and even individual projects such as Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Lightyear. The Fantastic Beasts films might just be the least successful of the lot.
