As HBO continues to expand the cast of its upcoming Harry Potter TV show, fans are getting more curious and excited to find out who HBO has tapped to play its next live-action Voldemort. The iconic villain was famously played by Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes in the blockbuster film franchise.

While waiting for HBO’s official announcement, fans keep on speculating about the potential casting of Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy. This comes after recent rumors suggested that the Oppenheimer actor might have been cast as the show’s Lord Voldemort.

What did Cillian Murphy say about playing Voldemort in Harry Potter?

During a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, when asked about his rumored casting as Voldemort, Murphy quickly denied the reports by confirming that he doesn’t really know anything about that. He went on to wish the actor who’ll be chosen for the role good luck since he knows how hard it will be to follow up on Fiennes’ iconic portrayal of the villain.

“No, my kids show me it occasionally, but no, I don’t know anything about that,” Murphy admitted. “I mean, also, it’s just really hard to follow anything Ralph Fiennes does. The man is an absolute acting legend. So, good luck to whoever is going to fill those shoes.”

The Harry Potter TV show will be led by newcomers Dominic McLaughlin as the titular character, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. Joining them are John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, and Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Gracie Cochrane as Ginny Weasley, Tristan Harland as Fred Weasley, Gabriel Harland as George Weasley, and more.

The HBO adaptation is written and executive produced by showrunner Francesca Gardiner (Killing Eve, Succession), with Mark Mylod serving as its director. It will be a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter book series, featuring an exciting and talented cast to lead a new generation of fandom. Executive producers are Mylod, Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and long-time Harry Potter franchise producer David Heyman. It is a production by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.

Filming is currently underway just in time for its highly anticipated premiere in 2027.
