Gremlins 3 Delayed With New Release Date, Steven Spielberg & Christopher Columbus To Return

Warner Bros. has pushed back its long-gestating Mogwai revival, confirming that Gremlins 3 will now release later than fans expected. The studio also locked in returning creative heavyweights, signaling that the project remains on track despite the schedule change.

The Gremlins 3 release date has shifted from November 19, 2027, to October 6, 2028.

Warner Bros. announced the change recently, alongside a separate adjustment to its DC Studios slate. Steven Spielberg returns as executive producer, working with Maiden Voyage’s Eleanor Columbus. Christopher Columbus, best known for directing the first two Harry Potter movies and Home Alone, takes the director’s chair and produces.

Hannah Marks handles the current script, building on an original draft by Columbus, Zach Lipovsky, and Adam Stein. Producers include Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario for Amblin Entertainment, plus Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe of 26th Street Pictures. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav first confirmed the project during a 2025 investor call. The studio has kept the official title, plot, and cast under wraps.

Joe Dante’s 1984 original centered on Billy, a young boy who adopts a furry creature called a Mogwai. Two rules govern the pet: keep it away from water and never feed it after midnight. Billy breaks both, and the creature spawns a wave of destructive gremlins that terrorize his town at Christmas. The film’s intensity helped usher in the PG-13 rating. It collected $212 million worldwide on an $11 million budget. The 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, managed $41 million but later earned cult status for its satirical take on corporate culture.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ president of development and production, Jesse Ehrman, welcomed the revival when the studio announced it. “Few titles are as beloved and iconic as ‘Gremlins,’ and we’re beyond excited to bring it back for both lifelong fans and a whole new generation,” he said in a statement.

The franchise also expanded to television with the 2023 animated prequel Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. Meanwhile, DC Studios’ Dynamic Duo moved to September 22, 2028, from June 20, 2028.
