Godzilla Minus Zero’s Rating Is Exactly Like Zack Snyder’s Justice League

Godzilla Minus Zero just made franchise history, and it has nothing to do with the monster on screen. The upcoming sequel shares a surprising rating distinction with Zack Snyder’s Justice League that no other film in the series has achieved before.

Godzilla Minus Zero received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association for some violent content and bloody images. This makes it the first R-rated film in the entire Godzilla franchise’s 70-year history. GKIDS, which distributes the film in North America, submitted it for classification under certificate #56195.

The franchise has traditionally stayed within PG-13 territory for its modern entries. Godzilla Minus One (2023) carried a PG-13 rating despite its wartime setting and intense kaiju sequences. Director Takashi Yamazaki’s sequel clearly pushes further into darker, more graphic territory.

Godzilla Minus Zero picks up in 1949, two years after the events of Minus One. The film continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face a new threat. Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe reprise their lead roles alongside returning cast members.

Yamazaki has spoken openly about the sequel’s elevated ambition. He told Collider in April 2026 that one unfinished sequence was “probably one of the best kaiju sequences that I’ve ever seen.” He also said audiences would “see something they’ve never seen before.” The film features a larger budget than its predecessor, which cost less than $15 million.

The R rating arrives alongside other major milestones for the production. It became the first Japanese film shot for IMAX. Industry sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Toho positions the sequel “not just as a sequel but as a statement piece.” The September 8 trailer also revealed King Ghidorah’s presence in the film.

Godzilla Minus Zero premieres at the New York Film Festival on September 26. It then opens theatrically in Japan on November 3 and in North America on November 6.
