Rapsody Breaks Down New Album on The Morning Hustle

Rapsody stopped by The Morning Hustle to discuss her new album, God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops, a project shaped by a trip to Ghana. The North Carolina MC said the title is about seeing the divine in everyone. “You can’t put God into any shape, form, fashion, race, gender,” she said. “God is in all things and everyone. But don’t take yourself out of that either.” Asked whether she finds herself defending the title, she said no. “This is just my perspective, my take, my understanding.”

On “Black Love,” Rapsody credited Roc Nation’s A&R team for bringing in Malice after she had already turned in the album. That feature is a rare get, since Malice seldom gives out verses. The record also carries social commentary, and she addressed the death of Nolan Wells.

Tracks like “Pick a Side” and “Abandon Me” reveal a more personal side. Lore’l asked her about who “Abandon Me” is about, and she spoke openly about exploring her sexuality in the past. On songs like “Apple Juice” she draws from D’Angelo’s Voodoo. Rapsody sees that lineage as part of documenting Black history through music.

On the state of hip-hop, she brushed off chart obsession. “Numbers don’t define success. All of that is illusion,” she said. She argued that women like Lauryn Hill belong in the GOAT debate. “At the end of the day, man, woman, child, greatness is great.”

She also reflected on her full-circle signing to Roc Nation and firmly defended Jay-Z as the greatest of all time. Fans can catch her on tour in Brooklyn, Atlanta, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
