On the January 14 episode of General Hospital, Sonny (Maurice Benard) confronted Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) about her defense strategy, Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) covered his tracks with Ava (Maura West), Carly’s (Laura Wright) search of Jack’s (Chris McKenna) room proved useful, Brad (Parry Shen) gave Jason (Steve Burton) a warning about Britt (Kelly Thiebaud), and Sidwell (Carlo Rota) and his partner made a new plan for their captive, Anna (Finola Hughes). Keep on reading to see how it all went down.

Catch & Release

Carly nearly got caught poking around Jack’s suite at the Metro Court by her boyfriend and Britt, but managed to hide in the bathroom before they entered the room. Clad in one of the hotel bathrobes, Carly overheard Britt complaining to Jack about how Sidwell wanted her to finish her work in a new lab he’d built on Spoon Island, where he could supervise her, so she wouldn’t be able to sneak data to the WSB. Carly was stunned when she heard Jack order Britt to figure something out, since the only reason she hadn’t been arrested yet was that she was useful to him.

After kicking Britt out, Jack heard a noise from the bathroom and took out a gun from the end table. Rushing into the bathroom with the gun drawn, he found Carly, who yelled that he’d nearly killed her. Returning to the sitting area, Jack demanded to know why she was in his room, so Carly pretended that she was waiting for him as a sexy surprise, not realizing that surprising her spy boyfriend was a bad idea. Jack asked her never to do something like that again, especially with Valentin on the loose. Confused, Carly replied that Valentin wasn’t in the hotel room with them, but Jack pulled her into a hug and declared that he never wanted Cassadine to come between them again. Reminding her that Valentin had tried to kill him twice — and had nearly killed her in the process — Jack confided that he’d realized how deeply he’d fallen in love with her the day she’d drunk poisoned champagne intended for him. As Carly wiped tears from her eyes, Jack shared that he’d always known she was smart and brilliant, and he didn’t want to lose her, but their conversation was interrupted when he received an alert about work.

The Evil Men Do

At Wyndemere, Valentin was poking around under the fireplace mantle when Ava entered the living room and informed him that she’d gotten rid of the trigger that opened the castle’s secret passageway. When Ava commented that she wasn’t aware Valentin knew Jenz, he replied that they went way back and seemed to convince Ava that Sidwell was hiding him at Wyndemere. Then, Ava stepped to the foyer to call for Pascal (to see if Jenz was done with his business call), but Valentin was gone by the time she reentered the living room.

Downstairs in Anna’s quarters, she exited through the open door while holding Pascal at gunpoint, but the moment she crossed the threshold, another of Sidwell’s associates put her in a sleeper hold, and she collapsed to the ground. Once Sidwell arrived, the other man blasted Pascal for falling for Anna’s trick. Jenz worried if the newcomer had been seen, but the man assured his partner that Anna had no idea where she was or who was holding her. Sidwell instructed Pascal to send Ava home. Then, he and the other man discussed their next steps for Anna, since they needed to find a new place for her now that the lab was complete.

Sidwell’s partner stated that too many people were aware of their project. Sidwell tried to place the blame on Britt and cut her loose. However, the other man declared that Dr. Westbourne was the best person to deliver a working prototype since she’d worked alongside Faison during his final years. Even though it would be risky to have both Britt and Anna on Spoon Island, Sidwell wanted to keep Britt close by, but his partner felt it would create too much suspicion if the doctor suddenly disappeared after her mysterious return to Port Charles.

Guest of Honor

Back in the living room, Pascal informed Ava that Sidwell was unexpectedly delayed with business, and the launch was waiting for her. When she insisted on waiting, the butler offered to pass along a message. Ava reported that she needed to speak with Jenz about his houseguest — and she didn’t mean Lucas — and she’d wait while Pascal delivered the message.

Hiding his alarm from Ava, Pascal headed down to the basement tunnels and informed his boss that he needed to hear what Ava had to say. As Sidwell returned upstairs, Pascal apologized again to the other man for being fooled by their prisoner. Sidwell’s associate replied that Anna wouldn’t be there much longer anyway and warned the butler to stick to the protocol and not be fooled by her again. Once Anna awoke on the couch, she shouted out to her captors, wanting to know who was holding her hostage. Standing up, she took a few steps before passing out again, but this time, Pascal declared over the intercom that he wouldn’t fall for her tricks again and left her there.

Upstairs, Ava informed Jenz that she’d run into his houseguest when she was on her way out earlier. His confusion about whom Ava was referring to was quickly cleared up when she asked him if it was a good idea to be helping Valentin Cassadine. Informing Ava that Valentin was not his guest, Jenz commended her for being discreet and asked her not to tell anyone she’d seen the fugitive at Wyndemere. Agreeing, Ava purred that Jenz could rely on her. Meanwhile, Anna again regained consciousness, only to discover that her nose was bleeding — a symptom of her polycythemia vera!

Comparing Notes

While looking for Britt at G.H., Jason ran into Elizabeth. She asked if he was upset with her since some people thought she’d taken Willow’s side and explained that she never meant for her testimony to implicate Michael. Understanding her position, Jason reassured her that things were fine between them. He added that he didn’t know how closing arguments had gone since he’d been keeping his distance from the trial, not wanting Drew to use his presence against Michael in any way. As they continued to discuss who may have shot Drew, Jason mused that the murder attempt was a direct result of his brother pushing a lot of people too far, and Liz shared how Willow had been ready to move on from Drew before he lured her back in. Although Willow was hurting herself, Jason said, Wiley, Amelia, Danny, and Scout were the real victims in the situation. He then explained how hard it’s been for Danny to be separated from his sister, and that Drew planned to keep Danny and Scout apart for as long as he could.

After Liz got a page about work, Jason ran into Brad, who asked him to stay away from Britt. When Jason insisted that he didn’t want to hurt her, Brad pointed out all the ways he did exactly that by making Britt believe she could count on him when the reality was that she wasn’t his priority. Then, Britt approached, and when Jason asked her if she had a moment to speak, Brad jumped in that he also needed to talk to her. Happy to learn that Jason had sought her out, Britt was torn about which man to speak with first. Ultimately, she decided to walk around the corner with Jason, who asked her out on an official date. Meanwhile, a frustrated Brad moaned to Liz about Britt and Jason. Liz acknowledged that she didn’t think the couple was a good match but advised Brad that it was none of their business and to stay out of it.

Living In The Gray

Returning to Miller & Davis, Alexis found Sonny waiting in her office. When he confronted her about why she implicated Michael when there were other suspects she could have targeted to drum up reasonable doubt for Willow, Alexis cried that failing to acquit Willow meant that Scout would be cut off from the family. And with Sam gone, she needed to protect her granddaughter, so Drew didn’t turn the little girl against them all. Besides, Alexis added, if Willow was acquitted, Michael might not even be charged with shooting Drew, but Sonny was sure the D.A. wasn’t going to drop the attempted murder of a sitting congressman. Fighting tears, Alexis replied that she had no choice but to do everything in her power to exonerate Willow — even if it meant jeopardizing her friendship with him.

Although he wasn’t happy that she’d put Michael in the middle of her defense, Sonny revealed that Alexis hadn’t lost his friendship, and he understood why she’d made the choices she had for Scout’s sake. When Alexis worried that she’d compromised her ethics by representing Willow, Sonny replied that she’d done her job as a defense attorney and if Willow did go free, at least she wasn’t a danger to society. When Alexis muttered what if she was, Sonny confided that he didn’t think Willow was capable of shooting Drew. Without sharing that she knew her client was guilty, Alexis posed a hypothetical “what if she did it.” “Well, you know what they say: There’s a thin line between love and hate,” Sonny replied. “Even good people can be pushed to do bad things.”

A Tangled Web

Carly got dressed and prepared to head out of Brennan’s room. When Jack promised to make it up to her, she kissed him and cheekily told him to go save the world. “You are my world. You saved me,” he responded, which earned him another kiss. Outside in the hallway, Carly cringed, torn over Jack’s declaration. Later, Jack answered a knock on his door, and Sidwell’s partner was standing on the other side! The man, whom Jack addressed as Director Cullum, informed the WSB field chief that they’d “lost” Anna Devane!

Back at her house, Carly shared the photos of the documents she’d found with Valentin, but he thought there should have been more evidence in Jack’s room. Carly also freaked out when Valentin revealed that Ava had seen him at Wyndemere, but he explained that he’d convinced Ava that Jenz was letting him hide on the island. Reminding Carly that she’d heard Jack and Britt talking about the doctor working at Wyndemere, Valentin theorized that Sidwell wouldn’t turn him into the police because whatever the businessman was hiding was on Spoon Island.
