Hamish Linklater on why Dean Cipher is training Marie in Gen V Season 2
Hamish Linklater explained Dean Cipher’s motives in Gen V season 2 during an interview with Screen Rant. Following Indira Shetty’s death in season 1, Cipher assumes control of Godolkin University. Across the first three episodes, Cipher directs his focus toward Marie Moreau, played by Jaz Sinclair, while also manipulating Cate Dunlap and advancing an ideology that is strongly pro-supe and anti-human.
Asked about Cipher’s broader vision, Linklater stated: “He’s trying to make a master race out of a master race. That’s his idea, and his tool is going to be Marie. He thinks she’s the one who’s going to give him supremacy over the other supremacist, Homelander.” Cipher’s training of Marie is thus positioned as central to his attempt to challenge Homelander’s dominance.
When pressed on Cipher’s perception of threats, Linklater clarified: “Well, you’ve always got to be careful of Homelander. That’s rule No. 1. Then these pesky kids, they’re a problem too. I don’t know Polarity. He doesn’t know that Polarity is actually going to be the biggest problem for him.” Linklater underscored that Cipher underestimates Polarity, portrayed by Sean Patrick Thomas, who becomes a central obstacle after the death of his son Andre.
Linklater also reflected on Cipher’s philosophy compared to Polarity, saying, “Well, we do, we represent that. But I think Cipher thinks that he’s going to figure out the workaround. I mean, frankly, if he can build Marie into as powerful a creature as he thinks he can, then she’s going to take care of whatever these side effects might be of these superpowers, and then his army’s really going to be strong.” Cipher’s manipulation of Marie is therefore not just about control but about weaponizing her abilities to offset limitations of unchecked power.
Cipher’s caution around Homelander, his efforts to isolate Cate, and his dismissal of Polarity all frame the conflicts driving the new season.
