Female Broadcaster Stirs NASCAR Fans Outrage After Wild Reporting Blunder Goes Viral

When Carson Hocevar landed two big punches on Ryan Blaney in the pit lane at Bristol last Saturday, several prominent media members were on the scene. Since then, they have shared their accounts of the moments leading up to the incident, offering fans a closer look at what really happened. Jordan Bianchi revealed that Blaney was rather calm when he approached the Spire Motorsports driver, while Michael Massie captured the entire altercation on camera, only for his phone to be damaged after a bottle was thrown into the mix by Ty Gibbs. Then there is Wendy Venturini’s alleged reporting, which struck a nerve with a portion of the fanbase.

On social media, clips of Venturini’s live reporting from Bristol on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio went viral, and she could be heard mentioning Ryan Newman’s name instead of Blaney’s. She also stated that Hocevar was on the ground when the two were brawling. That, as fans pointed out, was also incorrect.

The fight between the two popular NASCAR drivers took place after the Bristol night race ended on Saturday. With 43 laps to go, Hocevar and Blaney were battling for second place. The No. 12 driver moved ahead of Hocevar and dropped to the inside line to block him. But Hocevar didn’t back out and made contact with the Ford, sending it spinning into the wall.

Hocevar went on to finish third and moved up to eighth in the Chase standings. Blaney, sadly, was classified 33rd after his race was ruined. He had been running well and even won Stage 2, but ultimately left Bristol two spots lower in sixth place in the standings. He was livid and walked over to Hocevar after the No. 77 driver got out of his car, looking to confront him aggressively.

Blaney first grabbed Hocevar, who didn’t wait around to see what would happen next. He landed one right hook on Blaney, followed by another. The Penske driver was pulled back and fell to the ground. Hocevar never lost his footing and remained upright throughout the altercation.

As for “Rocket Man,” Ryan Newman, he’s been retired since 2023. The 18-time Cup Series race winner’s last race at the level was the 2023 Championship weekend in Phoenix, and he wasn’t even at Bristol on Saturday night.

“Yes, I was listening to it, and the b*mbo that was right there totally messed it up. Not only that. She called Ryan Blaney. Ryan Newman. She should be fired. She’s a total f***** idiot,” one fan wrote on X.

Venturini, most likely, had a slip of the tongue. Fans, however, were not letting her off that easily, especially for the way she reported the fight. Venturini said that while security held Blaney back, Hocevar fell to the ground.

“This has to be AI,” one wrote. “No way they reported it that badly.”

“Hocevar was NEVER on the ground. Blaney was because he got pulled down by the guy in the real shirt. He saved Blaney from getting his ass beat pretty bad. Hocevar literally connected a perfect right hook,” another fan wrote on X.

It was an unfortunate moment for Venturini, and one that also made some fans dig into her past, including her connection to the stock car racing world, which stems from her father, Bill Venturini, a two-time ARCA Racing Series champion. Her mother, too, has a history in racing. In 1987, she served as the front tire changer for Bill’s car as part of the first all-female pit crew in professional racing.

The Venturini family also launched their own team, Venturini Racing, which helped kickstart the careers of Cup Series stars like Joey Logano, Christopher Bell, and William Byron.

Sadly, the positive impact of their legacy was not one fans focused on. Those complaining about Wendy after Bristol saw her as someone who made it to the sport primarily because of where she comes from.

“The nepo glaze in the sport has always been over-the-top embarrassing,” another fan wrote on X.

Wendy Venturini herself is no stranger to broadcasting. She first served as a commentator for DirecTV’s NASCAR Hot Pass coverage in 2007, becoming the first female play-by-play announcer in auto racing history. Seven years later, she anchored the Sylvania 300 in the NASCAR Sprint Series, marking another historic first for a female announcer.

While Venturini’s reporting became a talking point after the Bristol brawl, the focus now shifts back to the two drivers at the center of it all. Blaney and Hocevar will have to put the incident behind them and get back to racing, with both still in the Chase. The question, however, is whether this is the start of an interesting rivalry that could heat up over the remaining seven races of the 2026 season.

Will there be consequences for what happened in Bristol?

NASCAR has loved this whole fiasco. Since the brawl, videos of Hocevar vs. Blaney have done the rounds all over social media, garnering millions of views. Fans love it too, and journalists from every corner of the garage have hinted that this spice — especially in a night race on a historic track like Bristol — was exactly what the sport needed.

That said, Hocevar did punch Blaney. And there have been some questions as to whether NASCAR would punish the Spire Motorsports driver for that. Or whether they would penalize Blaney for instigating it.

As of now, it seems as though NASCAR won’t do either. Veteran journalist Bianchi, who was at the scene, explained on The Teardown podcast on Sunday that there are ‘unspoken rules’ within the garage.

“NASCAR security gives you one move. You get one move. If you grab somebody, that’s your one move. If you wanna punch somebody, that’s your move,” he said.

Blaney and Hocevar both used up their respective moves, with the latter coming out the apparent winner. It was a heat-of-the-moment incident, the kind that NASCAR typically refrains from punishing drivers for. Bianchi also opined that the sanctioning body levying fines on either of them would be one of the worst decisions it could make.

“You’ve got one of your most popular drivers in Ryan Blaney, your other most popular driver in Hocevar. I know people don’t like him, but he’s popular, and he’s also, by the way, public enemy number one with people in the garage. And you’ve got these guys fighting at Bristol, of all places? On a short track on a Saturday night? This is quintessential NASCAR,” he added.

For now, the Bristol incident appears to be behind them, but the story may not end there. Hocevar and Blaney will have plenty more chances to cross paths as the Chase continues, and the way they race each other could be worth watching. What happened at Bristol was born out of one heated moment. What comes next will show whether it was simply that, or the beginning of something bigger.
