While major artists threw down massive sets at Nocturnal Wonderland’s other stages, Camp OG and Insomniac Fridays kept the pulse of the real rave scene over the weekend.
Insomniac might be a global powerhouse today, but it began in the heart of the bustling Los Angeles rave scene in the ‘90s. The Pasquale Rotella-led brand has launched countless experiences, from unique showcases to mega festivals, over its three-decade run. Through it all, Nocturnal Wonderland has remained a consistent force in the scene.
Nocturnal Wonderland was Insomniac’s first major push into massives, and its three-decade history is filled with stories. The renegade nature of its early years, venue changes, and shifts in size, scale, and theming have brought the festival to where it is today. Yet a pulse from the past still thumps deep in Nocturnal’s soul, and it’s grown more present year after year through Camp OG and, more recently, Insomniac Fridays.
If you’ve camped at Nocturnal Wonderland over the past decade, you’ve probably experienced at least a bit of Camp OG. They were a force to be reckoned with in the campgrounds for years before they began to drip into the festival itself. Late nights, classic tracks, and unadulterated rave vibes are what’s on the menu when you head to their location.
This motley crew of OG ravers helped lay the groundwork for Insomniac decades ago, and they’ve stayed true to the brand ever since. The demographic of its members is older, and perhaps they might move a bit slower, but don’t let that fool you, because they’re all still ravers at heart. These are the diehards. The lifers. The ones who buck the notion that raving has an expiration date or that you need to retire at some point.

Camp OG’s ethos and roots carry their presence into Nocturnal Wonderland’s festival grounds.
You can always find Camp OG members grooving at different sets throughout the festival, because their taste varies just as much as the rest of the scene. But in recent years, the crew expanded its presence within the festival grounds with a hosted stage.
The BeatBox Boombox Art Car became Camp OG’s home this year on Sunday, featuring a curated lineup that primarily focused on the sounds of the past. Classic house and techno, breaks, and more all boomed from its speakers, courtesy of artists like Donald Glaude and Thee-O, Mark Lewis, Maximus Grooves, Lenny V, and more.
Those throwback sounds were mixed with contemporary ones, and blasted in full force to a hungry crowd of new and old ravers alike. Even Pasquale Rotella joined in for a bit, hopping on top of the art car and chatting with his old friends.
“The Camp OG stage was next level,” said Donald Glaude after Nocturnal. “The energy was kinetic. It was an honor and a privilege to play it. I can’t wait to play it again.”

It didn’t stop with Camp OG at Nocturnal Wonderland, as newly relaunched Insomniac Fridays also appeared at this year’s edition.
Insomniac Fridays turns back the clock to the brand’s earliest years, when Pasquale still hosted renegade, underground events in warehouses in the heart of Los Angeles. Those who attended EDC Las Vegas this year might’ve stumbled on its side stage there, which featured sets from true rave legends who helped shape the OG scene.
It was exciting to see this carry into Nocturnal Wonderland, where Insomniac Fridays hosted both days of the Rave Cave stage. Aside from a few contemporary drum and bass acts, Subsonic and Basstripper, practically every other artist had deep roots in the early scene, from Reid Speed and Oscar Da Grouch to Simply Jeff and Vitamin D.
Thee-O, who has been part of Camp OG for many years and helped it grow, is one of the masterminds behind Insomniac Fridays. And who better to tap to bring this to life than one of the foundational figures in the Southern California scene?
Pasquale Rotella first reached out to Thee-O ahead of EDC Las Vegas this year to help bring Insomniac Fridays to life. “I wanted to make sure that we weren’t just making a Camp OG 2.0 but really focused on bringing back foundational and legacy talent that may have dropped out of the scene, but still remain passionate about the music,” he shared about his vision.
I think we found the right mix for both EDC and Nocturnal, and it is great to get the feedback we have been getting. I am looking forward to seeing how Insomniac Fridays grows over the next couple of years.

If you found yourself at the Rave Cave during Nocturnal, you’d quickly find it lived in its own world.
While major artists took the stage elsewhere, those who craved a proper groove, positive vibes, or an intimate atmosphere trickled into the area. You don’t need larger-than-life production to have a good time. Some blacklights, colorful slinkies, and light shows from other ravers will do the trick while keeping the focus on the music.
The Rave Cave featured unique performances, like vinyl sets, along with a live performance from Simply Jeff, who has a deep history with Nocturnal. The Phonomental Music label boss, who is part of the Nexus Artists roster, was one of the artists who took the stage at the event’s first edition in 1995, when Insomniac was still in its formative years.
Decades later, and in a much different era of the scene, Simply Jeff returned to Nocturnal Wonderland to perform at this year’s edition. Utilizing a special mixer provided by Allen & Heath, he wooed the crowd with his live performance alongside Sharyn Maceren, a freestyle dance music artist from the Bay Area with whom he has recently collaborated.
“Performing on the Rave Cave stage hosted by Insomniac Fridays at this year’s Nocturnal Wonderland was incredible,” said Simply Jeff. “Having the opportunity to play my newest releases live with Sharyn Maceren was an experience I will never forget. Especially feeling the great vibes from everyone there, it really took me back to when I played the first Nocturnal Wonderland in 1995, in so many ways!”
The past-meets-present nature of Camp OG and Insomniac Fridays helped keep the rave scene’s roots alive at Nocturnal Wonderland.
In an era when everything feels like it’s moving faster than ever, and production seems larger than life, Camp OG and Insomniac Fridays are a breath of fresh air. The dialed-back atmospheres that both offer can easily remind veteran ravers why they fell in love with dance music in the first place. They also shine a light on the history for those who are younger and didn’t get to experience it firsthand.
The diehards who call Camp OG and Insomniac Fridays home are passionate about the scene, about real DJing, and about having a great time. After all, life isn’t always about chasing what’s hyped, fresh, or flashy; sometimes it’s about going back to the basics and feeling the embrace of a community that might have a bit of snark but will quickly welcome you with open arms.
So the next time you’re at Nocturnal Wonderland, or any event where Camp OG and Insomniac Fridays might be present, give them a chance. Their dancefloors are always open, and you might find a new favorite place to help spark your inner groove.
