Video game adaptations are tough. From the polarizing second season of The Last of Us to the bevy of adaptations preceding it, it's difficult to get it right. The obvious missing element of the player can put a strain on a story. So how, then, do you adapt one where the purpose is essentially a puzzle horror game? That's what Genki Kawamura had to contend with when adapting the Japanese horror game Exit 8. The concept is simple: you are stuck in a subway station, and you have to spot the anomalies of the station in order to proceed up the levels and get out. If you see an anomaly, you must retreat and, if you are correct, you continue on to exit. However, if you miss an anomaly or incorrectly identify one, you go back to Level 0. It's a frustrating game at times, one that relies more on your attention to detail than jump scares, but Genki Kawamura was able to turn this simple game into a compelling narrative with this suspenseful film.
