A former baseball executive who spent years building fan experiences watched in horror as everything he worked to create was torn down in seconds. The ex-Marlins president witnessed what he called a stomach-turning Phillies Karen (identified as Cheryl Richardson Wagner) moment during Friday night’s Phillies-Marlins game that left him questioning the very fabric of sports culture he helped nurture at Miami’s LoanDepot Park.

The incident that sparked nationwide outrage unfolded when Harrison Bader’s home run sailed into the stands, where a fan, Drew Feltwell, caught the ball and handed it to his 10-year-old son Lincoln. What should have been a magical birthday memory quickly turned into a nightmare when a woman in a Phillies jersey confronted the family, demanding the ball for herself. The woman, now infamously known as “Phillies Karen,” grabbed the father’s arm, pointed aggressively at where the ball landed, and shouted “That was in my hands” until the intimidated father eventually took the ball from his son and handed it over.

Now, David Samson, the former Marlins president, has expressed his disgust, admitting he “got a little sick in my mouth” watching the incident unfold at the ballpark he helped create. He recalled on Nothing Personal, “A foul ball went into the stands… a home run went into the stands in Marlins Park… So, look at the video at what happens when a ball goes into this stands on a home run,” while expressing his frustrations over what he witnessed.

The video showed the woman screaming at the man, “No, you took it from me!” Samson goes on to detail the painful confrontation. “That is Philly’s fans at Marlins Park, where a woman claims that a man took the ball, and then the woman took the ball, and now the woman’s Karen.”

He emphasized his organization’s mission by noting they had “special sections where the Clevelander used to be because we wanted the ability for fans to have home run balls,” making the woman’s aggressive behavior particularly devastating. Samson’s frustration was palpable as he described the viral video, highlighting the fact that “there was a kid involved.” It was disappointing for him as the incident violated everything his ballpark was designed to celebrate—creating magical moments for young fans rather than traumatic ones.

“There are things that we practice with our front office employees regarding customer service. There’s training regarding customer service. This training is done by everyone from the team president down to the assistant traveling secretary. And this training is meant to empower you to change the experience of a customer… Every spring training, every team player signs a gazillion things, and we have it in inventory to be used when there’s a situation that we feel requires it,” the ex-Marlins prez kept explaining, as he wanted the Phillies to step up.

“When you’ve got a fan, who’s a kid, and you’re trying to build your fanbase, and yes, he a Phillies fan, but maybe he’s from Florida, maybe he’ll become a Marlins fan, maybe he won’t; but his kids will become a Marlins fan in 30 years and the streak of generations rooting for a team other than their hometown team will disappear. Maybe… It happens. But when you are Marlins and you’re empowered, which Bruce Sherman has done to his people, you go right up to that person, and you give them a gift immediately,” exclaimed David Samson, what the Marlins could’ve done had it been a fan of theirs.

The ball-snatching incident exploded across social media, with millions of Americans condemning the woman’s behavior as entitled, cruel, as several called her “public enemy #1.” ESPN “SportsCenter” hosts Nicole Briscoe and Michael Eaves spoke out against the woman. Briscoe stated, “Hate to call her a Karen, but… Because here’s the thing, you took it from a kid,” while Eaves added, “Make her feel terrible” after hearing the Marlins later gave the boy a gift bag.

The incident has sparked conversations about adult behavior at sporting events, with the woman representing “everything wrong with adult behavior at sporting events,” as sports are supposed to bring out the best in people, not turn them into entitled bullies who steal baseballs from children. But as Samson shared, the Marlins organization responded by gifting the young fan merchandise and signed memorabilia, salvaging what they could from a public relations nightmare that no amount of preparation could have prevented.

Yet beneath the viral outrage and corporate damage control lies a deeper story—one father’s split-second choice that revealed the true human cost of one woman’s selfishness.

Father’s agonizing decision reveals the true cost of Phillies Karen’s selfishness

While millions watched the viral confrontation unfold online, the real story lies in the impossible choice one father faced in that moment. Drew Feltwell had just experienced every dad’s dream – catching Harrison Bader’s home run and placing it directly into his son Lincoln’s glove during their special day at the ballpark.

The magic shattered instantly when the woman approached their seats. Drew recalled the jarring encounter. “I was already ecstatic, like got Bader’s home run ball, and I get to put it in my son’s glove, and that was, it was already enough. You know, and then, then here she comes. Something touched my arm, and then she just screamed in my ear, ‘That’s my ball,’ like, so loud.” The confrontation left Drew facing an agonizing decision between fighting back or teaching his son a lesson in grace.

“There was kind of a fork in the road, like, I’m gonna go one direction and then probably regret. Or go this direction and do something in front of my kids that, you know, like a teaching moment,” Drew explained to NBC News. He chose dignity over conflict, taking the ball from his son’s glove and handing it over to the demanding stranger.

The story found redemption when Harrison Bader personally signed a bat for Lincoln after learning about the incident. So, sometimes, choosing the high road leads to something even better than what was taken away.
