Euphoria showrunner Sam Levinson and star Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje recently delved into an important moment from Season 3 Episode 2, where Laurie insults Alamo and calls him a “pig.” In an interview, the pair shared their respective perspectives on how that offensive word cut deep for the character and addressed his insecurity.

Levinson and Akinnuoye-Agbaje sat down for an interview to promote the HBO drama’s latest entry. During the interaction, the pair discussed a key moment in Euphoria Season 3 Episode 2, “America My Dream,” where Laurie offends Alamo by calling him a “pig” during a tense phone call.

The creator told Variety that the scene highlighted the two characters’ “racial dynamics” and their “built-in animosity.” He added, “With the pig comment, it just seemed interesting as an entry point into this man’s psychology.”

Levinson continued, saying the insult addressed something Alamo couldn’t ignore. He also said that he didn’t understand why Laurie called him that. “Is it about his weight? Is it because he’s greedy?” he wondered before noting how it brought up his insecurity and highlighted his human side.

“There are things someone could say to any one of us that may seem insignificant,” he further stated. “But it sticks in our head.”

The Malcolm & Marie director concluded by stating that the offensive word tackled the “absurdity of racial dynamics,” and “miscommunications that lead to greater troubles.”

Meanwhile, Akinnuoye-Agbaje noted how Alamo worked to move himself up the social ladder to head his own empire. He added that “pig” being more offensive than the N-word was personally intriguing. “For me, it was about trying to figure out why,” he further stated. “And Sam gave me license in the scene.”

Sharing his perspective, the His Dark Materials actor stated, “Well, a pig is an animal that eats its own feces. And here I am, the emperor, and she’s calling me a pig. It triggered all of his insecurity.”

Akinnuoye-Agbaje also noted how Alamo felt Laurie should be grateful for his help in joining the drug trade. He added that the latter calling the former a “pig” triggered his “self-worth.”

Pointing to the scene in Euphoria Season 3 Episode 2 where Alamo tells his men about a pig’s nature, he says his insecurity stems from his childhood, where he tried to “validate himself.” “It harkens back to him being a little boy trying to validate himself, and even having done that, the person who he least respects and who he would regard as a pig is calling him one. It’s a wonderful way to unveil the layers of insecurity, paranoia and trauma in Alamo — the bizarreness of it,” he further explained.
