Emmerdale confirms legend’s return as wedding descends into chaos

With all this talk of new UK storm names, one to hit could be aptly named Storm Bernice given how much destruction this Emmerdale legend always manages to leave behind her.

Bernice Blackstock (Samantha Giles) left the Dales under a dark cloud, having committed fraud and being threatened with prison by her sister. She’s back – but causing just as much of a stir as before.

Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham) had learned that her mum wouldn’t be at her big day, so it’s a huge surprise when she walks down the stairs on the day in her gown only to find her mum at the bottom.

Bernice is in town to disrupt things of course – she reveals that it’s not just Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson) who’s hiding a big secret (that he might be gay, pretty significant), Gabby also has something that’s of wedding-stopping ilk.

Bernice urges her not to keep the secret any longer, and Gabby vows to speak with her husband-to-be. She tells Vinny that they need to talk.

Meanwhile, her fiancé is also having serious doubts in terms of how to manage the enormous guilt he’s gifted himself. His bottom nearly falls out when Gabby says they need to talk, and she arrives to tell him that something has been wrong for a long time.

Bernice is gobsmacked when Gabby returns from the talk to her to admit that she did not call the wedding off. The big day is set to go ahead, much to Bernice’s chagrin. But will she be able to hold her tongue?

She may not have to – when Gabby arrives at the altar there’s a significant person missing- her fiancé. Vinny has done a bunk and Gabby is left shattered as Kammy (Shebz Miah) reveals he’s gone.

‘I think she would really struggle with having had all this time and preparation for the wedding, why he didn’t feel he could speak to Gabby about it’, Rosie Bentham said, revealing how Gabby would react if she discovered Vinny’s secret.

‘It would obviously probably mean that the wedding doesn’t go ahead so quickly. It would throw a huge spanner in the works. But I think she would really feel for Vinny and feel for the struggle he’s going through. Because they were friends before, I think she would want to support Vinny in the best way she can.

‘Obviously having to sacrifice her wedding dream, but she’s been there before – Nicky was gay. I think it would open some wounds she was trying to heal.’

Not content with nearly ruining her daughter’s wedding, Bernice also causes waves while staying in the B&B. With both her daughter and her sister furious at her return, she has a good cry on Bob’s (Tony Audenshaw) shoulder.

They open a bottle of wine, get to reminiscing about lost love, and as the drinks keep flowing things start to happen.

Is Bernice going to break another heart?

Rosie added: ‘Whether they get married or not I think there’s a lot that needs delving into, and some secrets that need to come out and need to be talked about. Whether they try to sweep things under the carpet or address it there and then, I hope Gabby gets her happy ever after. She does deserve it.

‘I think she needs someone who is really going to make her feel safe and secure. Hopefully she concentrates on being a mum to Thomas as well, and being a good businesswoman. I think there’s a lot more to come in Gabby’s personal aspects as well.’
