The project will reunite Johnson with Kevin Hart, continuing their successful partnership from the previous Jumanji films. The franchise began with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017 and followed with Jumanji: The Next Level in 2019, both of which were global box office successes. Johnson’s announcement confirms the series will continue with its third installment.
At the same festival, Johnson also spoke about his preparation for another role in Lizard Music, directed by Benny Safdie. He explained that he is losing weight to play a “whimsical, eccentric 70-something-year-old” character called Chicken Man. Johnson stated, “I still have a long way to go,” noting that the transformation requires a significant lifestyle shift after gaining 30 pounds of muscle for The Smashing Machine.
Johnson talked about Safdie’s pitch for Lizard Music and stated, “And after about 45 minutes, this pitch ended and I said, ‘I am your Chicken Man.’” The film is based on Daniel Pinkwater’s novel about a septuagenarian whose best friend is a chicken. It marks Johnson’s continued exploration of roles beyond his established action-hero image.
While reflecting on his career choices, Johnson acknowledged, “I felt for a few years, I was pigeonholed because I allowed it to happen.” He added that The Smashing Machine and Lizard Music offered opportunities to redefine his acting path.
Despite focusing on transformation, Johnson emphasized that he will continue appearing in large-scale blockbusters. He confirmed Jumanji 3 as his next major studio project.
