Disney’s The Lion King Director Tapped for ‘AI-Assisted’ Movie From Tilly Norwood Creators

The Acclaimed director of Walt Disney Pictures‘ 1994 masterpiece, The Lion King, has been tapped for an “AI-assisted movie.” It comes from the creators of AI Actress Tilly Norwood.

Rob Minkoff, who co-directed the original Lion King with Roger Allers, has joined forces for Storm Dogs, by Particle 6 (via Variety). It’s the studio’s next project after Misaligned.

Minkoff will serve as the creative lead on the AI movie. He will work with Particle 6 CEO and founder Eline van der Velden to develop the story, characters, and script.

Storm Dogs will be a family comedy-drama, and its story will focus on a toddler named Poppy. She tries to get help from a group of dogs to send her home after a storm hits her English village and separates her from her adult caretaker.

What else has Rob Minkoff worked on besides The Lion King?

Besides The Lion King, Rob Minkoff has earned accolades for his several other famous projects. He kicked off the popular live-action animated comedy film franchise Stuart Little in 1999.

The first installment earned solid reviews from critics and currently holds a Tomatometer score of 66% on Rotten Tomatoes. Made on a $105 million budget, the movie grossed nearly $300 million worldwide.

The director’s second movie in the series did much better with critical reception, earning an impressive Tomatometer score of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Minkoff also worked on the 2008 action-fantasy wuxia film The Forbidden Kingdom. Its cast was led by Jackie Chan, alongside Jet Li, Michael Angarano, Yifei Liu, and Collin Chou, among others. The movie was a hit, earning over $129 million globally against a $55 million budget.

Rob Minkoff has also worked on several TV shows. He was a producer on the animated musical comedy series The Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show. Further, he has also served as an executive producer and co-creator of Rainbow Rangers. The American-Irish animated television series ran from 2018 to 2022.
