Winning a Career Grand Slam does not grant you too many happy days- just ask Taylor Townsend. The World No.2 doubles player was on a high after clinching the US Open title with Katerina Siniakova. Still, it did not take long for the American to come from the Arthur Ashe Stadium to a hospital bed, requiring emergency surgery. While the procedure had gone well, Townsend had a message from the hospital, sharing her situation, while having a strong message from her loved one.

“So y’all I’m coming up well over 36 hours no food, I was finally able to drink something but I’m just about to like disappear into this bed,” said Townsend while sharing a video from the hospital on her Instagram story. “Like you see the crack over here? I am gonna fall right through that..and if keep this up they’re gonna have to change my bed to the baby bed.”

Townsend had to leave while playing at the Guadalajara Open in a hurry as the American needed immediate medical care. She had won her first round match in the competition, but she could not stay in the competition to face top-seeded Marta Kostyuk in the next round.

While fasting is a standard procedure as a post-op procedure in case of emergency surgeries, Townsend has the messages of her loved one to keep her battle through this difficult period. The World No.1 shared the loving message from her son, Adyn, whose words have been a source of strength for Townsend.

“Baby boy told me to flex up and ne strong, so that I shall,” said Townsend on her Instagram story while sharing the picture of her son who is seen flexing his arms. Townsend has been an example all across the WTA for balancing her duties as a mother while flourishing as one of the top doubles players in the sport. The American has to stay away from her young son quite often, as Tour logistics do not allow for a child at all times.

Last year, when Townsend was in the middle of her busy schedule on the North American hard-court swing, she shared the moments of a tearful goodbye between her and Adyn. These memories let the fans know about the hardships that players go through while playing on the Tour, while being away from their loved ones.

While the surgery will keep Townsend out of action for some time, the American is no stranger to coming back from injuries. Only this year, she suffered a concussion at the Miami Open, which sidelined her from the early parts of the clay season. There was no stopping her, though, once she came back at the French Open, where she won the title with Siniakova.

However, staying away from her son for most of the year might well be worth it for Townsend, who has been on a run of her life, both in singles, where she achieved a career milestone this year, and in doubles, while she had a marquee moment.

Mostly known for her doubles exploits, Townsend has had her fair share of success in singles as well in 2026. The American reached her maiden Tour-level final at the ATX Open, and while she could not cross the line against Peyton Stearns in the final, the first final was a massive career milestone for Townsend.

At the US Open, Townsend beat two seeded players in Maja Chwalinska and Diana Shnaider to reach the fourth round, before losing to Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets. However, her fourth-round run ensured she defended her ranking points from last year’s US Open, maintaining her ranking within the Top 100.

As for her doubles performances, Townsend’s partnership with Katerina Siniakova has established itself as one of the most dominant doubles teams on the WTA. The two have six titles this year, including two Majors at the French Open and the US Open, and three WTA 1000 titles in Indian Wells, Miami, and Madrid.

Winning the US Open meant that Townsend completed her Career Grand Slam alongside Sinikova. The pair had already won the Australian Open last year and the Wimbledon title back in 2024 before completing the coveted set this year. For Siniakova, this was the second time she had won all four Majors, having previously done so with her compatriot, Barbora Krejcikova.
