Reader says new Gatwick runway is 'very good news'

It is very good news that the government has approved plans to build a second runway at Gatwick airport (Metro, Tue).

Sir Keir Starmer says the £2.2billion scheme will help the economy grow while meeting climate commitments.

However, green campaigners and locals are against the move.

In my view, people going on holiday will get a greater choice of destinations at a lower cost. The second runway will also be good for the economy, tourism and trade, and will create thousands of skilled, well-paid jobs.

As you would expect, the Green Party’s new leader, Zack Polanski, opposes the project – complaining that ‘Labour keeps wheeling out the same nonsense about growth, but at what cost?’

This is to admit the Greens oppose any growth of our economy and the resulting improvement in our living standards. Will Podmore, by email

Will the new runway really mean ‘lower costs’ for a holiday?

Could the chancellor Rachel Reeves be asked to explain, please, how the building of a second Gatwick runway ‘will mean lower costs for a family holiday’? Simon Grigor, South Harrow

Reader points out Farage’s hypocrisy when it comes to criticising legal migrants

Nigel Farage has vowed that hundreds of thousands of migrants living and working legally in the UK will be deported if Reform win power (Metro, Tue).

‘Far too many that have come don’t work, have never worked, and never will work,’ he says.

Farage is quite right when he claims too many show up from elsewhere claiming benefits but never make any effort to work. I have it on good authority that residents of Clacton elected a newcomer to be their MP more than a year ago – a position furnished with an abundance of generous allowances – who has subsequently been spotted gallivanting all over the world but has yet to be seen to put in one solid day’s work in the locale. Reader calls Sadiq Khan’s plan to pedestrianise Oxford Street ‘ridiculous’

I appeal to London mayor Sadiq Khan to please scrap his ridiculous plan to pedestrianise Oxford Street (Metro, Mon).

Have you never heard of the expression, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,’ Mr Khan?

The £150million for the scheme could be put to far better use elsewhere. And where is all of the banned traffic supposed to go? Clogging up the charming side streets that run parallel to Oxford Street?

Yes, Oxford Street is noisy, crowded and congested but it has a buzz and personality like nowhere else. That’s why people flock there from all over the world.

I’ve worked and shopped in that area for more than 60 years and still get a little thrill every time I come out of Oxford Circus or Tottenham Court Road stations knowing I’m in such a special place.

If he carries out these plans, a unique and much-loved part of London will be lost for ever. Sue Allen, Shenfield

Should King Charles dismiss the Duchess of York from the Royal Lodge?

Charities have severed ties with the Duchess of York after it emerged she sent an email to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein describing him as a ‘supreme friend’ (Metro, Tue).

Surely King Charles now has the trump card to get her and Prince Andrew out of the Royal Lodge

So-called ‘patriots’ are flying the Union Jack upside down

Attention all ‘patriots’ – please learn how to fly the Union Flag the right way up.

Half of those that I see on lamp posts are flying upside down. It makes you look ignorant and disrespectful.

Stick with the England flag – not even you can get that upside down. Graham, Doncaster
