Unless you got your hands on Demon's Souls way back in 2009, it's most likely that Dark Souls 1 was your first introduction into the twisted worlds of Hidetaka Miyazaki. The game helped spread the rather toxic phrase 'git gud' and set the bar for how difficult games could be while still pulling players back in for just one more go.
