Keir Starmer has attacked Elon Musk after he told a far-right rally that “violence is coming” to the UK.
The prime minister’s spokesman said the X owner’s “dangerous and inflammatory rhetoric” would be rejected by the British people.
More than 100,000 people marched through central London on Saturday in the “Unite the Kingdom” event organised by far-right activist Tommy Robinson.
Appearing by videolink, Musk called for the Labour government to be replaced in the latest salvo in his long-running feud with Starmer.
He also told the crowd that they will have to “fight back or die” if they want to defend their country.
“Violence is going to come to you,” he said. “You will have no choice. You are in a fundamental situation here where, whether you choose violence or not, violence is coming to you. You either fight back or you die. That’s the truth.”
Asked about the comments on Monday, the PM’s spokesman said: “This is a fair, decent and tolerant country. The last thing the British public want is this sort of dangerous and inflammatory language. The British public won’t have any time for it.”
The Metropolitan Police said 26 of their officers were injured at Saturday’s rally, including four seriously, after allegedly being attacked by some of those taking part.
In a post on X on Sunday, Starmer said the UK “will never surrender” the Union Flag to the far-right.
He said: “People have a right to peaceful protest. It is core to our country’s values. But we will not stand for assaults on police officers doing their job or for people feeling intimidated on our streets because of their background or the colour of their skin.
“Britain is a nation proudly built on tolerance, diversity and respect. Our flag represents our diverse country and we will never surrender it to those that use it as a symbol of violence, fear and division.”
