The Chicago Cubs will be without star outfielder Kyle Tucker as they continue to battle for playoff positioning.

Chicago placed Tucker on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, retroactive to Saturday, with a left calf strain and recalled top catching prospect Moisés Ballesteros.

Tucker has been battling the calf issue for a week, with the ailment keeping him out of the Cubs’ lineup since Sept. 2. The four-time all-star has been a major part of Chicago’s successful season, as he owns a .854 OPS, 22 homers and 25 stolen bases in 133 games.

Despite a down stretch through the dog days of the summer, the 28-year-old had begun to heat up right before his calf flared up.

He will be eligible to return to the Cubs on Sept. 16 at the earliest.

Ballesteros, meanwhile, will return to the majors for his second stint with the big club after making his MLB debut earlier this season.

The 21-year-old backstop went just 4-for-18 during his six-game audition, but has continued to hit at triple-A Iowa, slashing .316/.385/.473 with 13 homers and 29 doubles over 114 games.

Chicago enters play Tuesday second in the NL Central and atop the NL wild-card standings with a 81-63 record.
