It’s set to be a major event for soap fans, so it would have been remiss if I hadn’t grilled Coronation Street boss Kate Brooks on the upcoming crossover with fellow ITV soap Emmerdale.

Ahead of major schedule changes for both soaps, Corrie and Emmerdale characters are set to cross paths for the first time in a special episode – the details of which have so far been kept tightly under wraps.

Unfortunately, Kate is really good at keeping secrets, though she did give me a little hint of what is in store.

‘It will be unmissable, that’s all I’m going to say! It’s very exciting. A lot of hard work has gone into making it brilliant,’ she revealed.

I caught up with Kate and Emmerdale star wife Michelle Hardwick at the Cure Usher Ball – an event hosted by Emmerdale actors Mark Jordon and Laura Norton.

The couple, who have been married since 2019, were keen to show their support for colleagues, as Michelle explained.

‘This is the first Cure Usher Ball that we’ve been able to attend, so we’re really excited to be able to support Laura and Mark and to be able to raise as much awareness and money as we can for the charity,’ she enthused.

The Cure Usher Ball is an annual event that sees attendees come together to raise much needed awareness and funds for the charity Cure Usher.

The charity focuses on funding research into a cure for Usher syndrome – a condition which affects hearing, vision and, in some cases, balance. Children with Usher syndrome are born with some level of hearing loss and will go on to lose their sight as they get older.

It is a cause close to Mark and Laura’s hearts, as their two young children, Jesse and Ronnie, have both been diagnosed with the condition.

There are still a few months of drama to come before we reach that epic soap crossover episode, including Corrie’s milestone 65th anniversary, which is set to see one cobbles resident meet their maker.

In the Dales, Michelle admitted that she isn’t sure exactly what the future holds for her character Vanessa Woodfield, but that there is ‘so much more to come’.

Enthusing about the current goings-on in the Emmerdale village, Michelle said: ‘There’s been a lot happening with John and Mackenzie and Aaron. It’s been edge of your seat stuff.’

Viewers will know that murderous John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) has finally been exposed for his crimes, but has since gone on the run with the help of Caleb Miligan (William Ash).

Is this the last we’ve seen of John, or could he be set to crawl out of the woodwork at a later date?
