Commodore International Corporation has begun shipping the Commodore 64C Ultimate to pre-order customers as of the week of October 26, 2026. Unlike previous recreations that utilized software emulation on modern mobile processors, the new 64C Ultimate utilizes hardware-level recreation to provide a cycle-accurate experience for enthusiasts and developers.
The manufacturing process relies on the original 1986 factory injection molds, which were reacquired from Individual Computers (iComp) to produce the “slim” style case. These specific molds have a storied industrial history, having moved from Japan to Pennsylvania before being sold at auction in 2014. The tooling survived a factory fire during its time in storage before being recovered for this production run, allowing the new units to match the exact physical dimensions and texture of the original 1980s hardware.
The internal hardware moves away from software emulation to hardware-level FPGA recreation.
Internally, the machine replaces the aging MOS Technology circuitry with the Ultimate 64 Elite-II motherboard. This board features an AMD Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) that mimics the behavior of the original C64 hardware at the transistor level. This architecture ensures compatibility with original peripherals, such as the 1541 disk drive, which often struggle with software-based emulators.
For audio purists, the 64C Ultimate includes two physical SID chip sockets. While the FPGA can recreate the famous 6581 and 8580 Sound Interface Device chips digitally, users have the option to install original vintage silicon to achieve authentic analog sound output. The system bridges the gap between eras by providing 1080p HDMI output and Wi-Fi connectivity alongside the traditional user and serial ports.
The updated model also features a modern mechanical keyboard built with Gateron Pro 3.0 switches, designed to retain the look of the original keycaps while improving tactile response and longevity. Software-wise, the unit includes the “CommoServe” file search tool, allowing users to browse and load software directly via the integrated network connection.
The Commodore 64C Ultimate BASIC Beige edition, which mirrors the classic 1986 aesthetic, is priced starting at $299.99. Following the initial wave of expedited pre-orders, standard shipping for remaining orders is expected to continue throughout November 2026.
