We’re living in an era where arguably the biggest crowd-pullers are not movie stars but a filmmaker and a fictional character. This summer saw both operating at the peak of their popularity. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth installment of the superhero series starring Tom Holland, grossed around $2.5 billion at the worldwide box office, despite signs that audiences had lost interest in the genre as a whole. Around the same time, Christopher Nolan delivered his biggest-ever hit, The Odyssey, which outgrossed previous films such as The Dark Knight and Oppenheimer. Remarkably, The Odyssey has almost doubled the global haul of Inception. The movie still hasn’t landed on the PVOD market, given Nolan’s strict theatrical exclusivity demands, but audiences can revisit one of his past hits this October on Netflix.
