Alejandro Garnacho has been accused of ‘falling asleep’ and costing Chelsea the win on his Blues debut against Brentford.

The Argentina international left Manchester United to join Chelsea for £40million during the summer transfer window having been banished from the first-team squad at Old Trafford by Ruben Amorim.

Having had no pre-season back in Manchester, Enzo Maresca resisted the temptation to throw the winger straight into his starting XI on Saturday night at the Gtech Stadium.

Cole Palmer came off the bench to equalise for Chelsea with Garnacho summoned from the bench as they pushed for the winner later on.

The 21-year-old was involved in Chelsea’s second as Moises Caicedo lashed home a stunning would-be winner after 85 minutes.

But Fabio Carvalho snatched an equaliser deep into added time with Kevin Schade’s long throw-in causing havoc in the box.

The former Liverpool starlet broke free at the back post to prod home a dramatic equaliser – with Garnacho the man who should have been marking him.

The former United star failed to track Carvalho’s burst into the six yard area with former Premier League star Jamie Redknapp laying the blame at his feet.

‘Garnacho has got to mark Carvalho. That is your job, it is as simple as that,’ Carragher told Sky Sports. ‘Don’t lose him, you are now one of the defensive players in there, if he gets in behind you there, it’s on you.

‘Everybody else is trying to win that first contact and it is not easy, Brentford have got some big guys. But Garnacho just falls asleep at the vital moment. The ball comes in from Schader and Garnacho is not concentration, they get that contract and there he is at the back post.’

Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola, also in the Sky Sports studio added: ‘The mistake is always the same. You start looking at the ball and you don’t see the man. It is the man who scores the goal, not the ball. ‘

United fans, still irked by Garnacho’s occasionally frustrating conduct at the club and his decision to hold out for a move to Chelsea, gleefully celebrated what turned out to be a debut to forget.

‘Garnacho lost his man who scored and cost Chelsea two points in stoppage time, my night is made,’ one wrote with another noting: ‘Garnacho zero awareness to notice he has someone behind him.’

Garnacho’s celebrations for Caicedo’s equaliser did not go unnoticed either.

‘Garnacho celebrated like he won the Premier League.. a few minutes later, due to his mistake Brentford scored,’ one fan wrote. Another quipped: ‘Garnacho main man syndrome couldn’t allow him to track his man back.’
