Check Point Software Technologies has transitioned its network security delivery model with the launch of a Firewall-as-a-Subscription (FWaaS) program. Introduced in late October 2026, the service is designed to move the costs associated with high-performance security hardware from a capital expenditure (CapEx) model to an operating expenditure (OpEx) model, eliminating the initial hardware purchase price for enterprise customers.

The shift follows industry data indicating that 55% of CISOs are managing flat or declining security budgets in 2026. By removing the barrier of upfront hardware costs, Check Point aims to provide organizations with access to its latest “Quantum Force” hardware and AI-driven security features without requiring a massive initial investment.

The subscription is built on Check Point’s R82.20 software platform, which features the “AI Network Firewall.” This platform is specifically engineered to govern AI agents and inspect AI-driven traffic, a requirement for modern enterprises integrating large language models and autonomous agents into their internal networks. The bundled package includes the physical firewall hardware, AI-powered threat prevention services, and Smart-1 Cloud agentic management.

Subscription Terms and Upgrade Paths

The FWaaS program is structured as a three-year predictable subscription term. Unlike traditional hardware cycles that often lock organizations into specific performance tiers for five or more years, this model allows for throughput upgrades during the 36-month commitment. This provides a bridge for companies that expect their data traffic or security requirements to grow before a standard hardware refresh cycle would typically occur.

Standard features included in the subscription are:

Quantum Force on-premises hardware delivery. Smart-1 Cloud management for centralized policy control. 24/7 premium support. AI-driven threat prevention capable of blocking zero-day exploits.

While the service is delivered as a subscription, it remains an on-premises hardware solution. The “as-a-service” designation refers to the financial and management structure rather than a purely cloud-resident firewall. After the 36-month term concludes, customers have the option to refresh their environment with newer hardware, maintaining a consistent OpEx cycle that avoids the “lumpy” spending patterns associated with traditional data center refreshes.

This model specifically addresses the technical requirements of the 2026 threat landscape, where AI-generated attacks and agentic workflows require more granular inspection than older firewall generations can provide. By bundling premium support into the monthly or annual fee, Check Point is positioning the service as a turnkey solution for organizations that need to modernize their perimeter security while navigating restricted fiscal environments.
