The sudden end of Watson left fans with unanswered questions, but new details are finally filling in the gaps. Series creator Craig Sweeny has now shared what the next chapter could have looked like, especially the evolving dynamic between John Watson and Sherlock Holmes.

Craig Sweeny details what Watson Season 3 would have depicted

Even though Watson wrapped after two seasons, Sweeny revealed that Season 3 had a clear direction. One of the biggest shifts would have been Sherlock’s role. Instead of staying a mystery or hallucination, Holmes, played by Robert Carlyle, was set to remain a real, active presence. Sweeny explained that Watson would have taken on a new role as Sherlock’s doctor, treating the lingering illness introduced in Season 2.

Originally, the creative team imagined Sherlock as a figure in Watson’s mind, tied to his brain tumor storyline. That idea changed once Carlyle stepped into the role. Sweeny said the chemistry between Watson and Holmes worked so well that they rewrote plans to bring Sherlock fully into the real world.

This pivot would have been central to Season 3’s storytelling. “Watson’s Holmes and Watson were fun to write and watch, and so we devised a way for Sherlock to be present in the real world,” Sweeny told Deadline.

Beyond the Holmes arc, the next season was also set to wrap up key stories for the younger doctors. Ongoing threads, like Beck’s death investigation and Sasha’s personal journey, would have reached proper conclusions. Sweeny noted that since medical fellowships last three years, Season 3 would naturally explore what comes next for the team as their training ends.

At its core, the show would have stuck to its signature style. “The heart of Watson was the cases,” Sweeny said, adding that new episodes would continue exploring unusual medical mysteries.

Despite its short run, Watson built a steady fanbase. The series earned mixed-to-positive reactions, with viewers appreciating its blend of medical drama and detective storytelling. On Rotten Tomatoes, it held a moderate score of 53%, reflecting divided critical opinions but decent audience interest.
