Emmerdale’s Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) has been through the worst thing a woman can experience, and yet other than the police, she can’t tell a soul.

She’s tied herself up in knots of lies over Leyla’s parentage, so now at the time she needs her family the most is the time she can’t tell them a thing.

If she did, she’d lose everything, and smug sexual predator Todd (Caroline Harker) knows it.

Dr Todd assaulted Charity after she – burdened by guilt – got drunk and faced off with Todd. As Charity passed out on the sofa, Todd made her despicable move.

On waking and realising what was happening to her, horrified Charity threw Todd out and went straight to the police, an incredibly brave move. But for what? Todd was released after some quick questioning, only for her to prey on Charity again.

Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) is also going through it at the moment, struggling to come to terms with the aftermath of his life-saving surgery and discovery his cancer has spread.

Together, they have something in common, that their respective struggles are causing them to push their loved ones away. Charity urges Cain to speak to his wife and best mate, but she can’t agree to do the same and won’t even tell Cain what’s truly happened.

Those closest to Charity believe she’s suffering from post-natal depression and husband Mack (Lawrence Robb) confides in Chas (Lucy Pargeter) that he has no clue how to support his wife. Chas is feeling guilty that she knows more than she is letting on.

Charity is in the loneliest, darkest place she’s ever been and rejects Mack again. She flees in her car and finds herself standing at the edge of a lake on the verge of a breakdown.

No one knows where she is but knowing she’s in a state, her family are worried. Mack is in bits when they can’t find her and decides to call the police.

Charity continues staring at the lake when she hears a noise behind her and realises she’s not alone. A stranger appears and they see Charity’s distress, urging her to open up to them. They reach out to touch her, and triggered Charity smacks them back.

Charity immediately apologises and the kind stranger takes it well, even analysing that Charity reacted to being touched because it was without giving consent. Charity starts to let her guard down and prepares to chat to this person. Is this how Serena Sugden (Casey Al-Shaqsy) makes her entrance?

Meanwhile, Mack pushes Chas to her limit, demanding to know if there’s anything she hasn’t told him.

Having already vowed not to keep Charity’s secret much longer, will she crumble?
