Britney Spears has pleaded guilty to reckless driving following her arrest and rehab stint.
On March 4 at around 9:30pm, the pop star, 44, was taken into custody after several 911 calls reported her to the California Highway Patrol’s Ventura Communications Center for ‘driving erratically at a high rate of speed’ in her BMW. She was subsequently charged with a DUI (driving under the influence).
Her car was also towed and impounded by Roy’s Towing in Thousand Oaks, California.
Today, she pleaded guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol and drugs as a hearing took place at Ventura County Superior Court.
Spears herself did not attend, but her lawyer, Michael A. Goldstein, was present to enter the plea on her behalf.
Avoiding jail time, the Piece of Me hitmaker was sentenced to 12 months’ probation.
According to the Ventura County District Attorney’s office, Spears was offered a ‘wet reckless’. This is a plea bargain reserved for those with no prior history of DUIs, those with a low blood alcohol level, and when there has been no injury or crash. The individual must also show ‘self-motivation to address underlying issues through rehabilitation or a drug and alcohol program.’
Indeed, Spears voluntarily entered a treatment facility, with her representatives issuing a statement when she was arrested. It read: ‘This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable.
‘Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully, this can be the first step in a long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.
‘Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.
‘Her boys are going to be spending time with her,’ they added in reference to her two sons from her marriage to Kevin Federline, 48.
Spears’ loved ones were then expected to come up with a ‘plan to set her up for success’ with her well-being.
Sources also previously said that Spears understood the severity of the incident, with TMZ reporting that she was ‘crying a lot’ while being processed at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.
