Bradley Beal Breaks Silence After Clippers Take Disrespectful Decision With Chris Paul

On Thursday, Clippers fans walked through the team store and spotted plenty of new gear to look at. Nothing looked out of the blue until they spotted Bradley Beal jerseys and read the number on the back: No. 3. 

That number has a very different meaning in Los Angeles. It belonged to Chris Paul for seven seasons, someone who sits as the franchise’s all-time leader in assists, and whose jersey many assumed would be retired for life. Of course, the backlash from Clippers fans was immediate, and Beal didn’t stay quiet about it. Responding to the criticism on social media, he first pushed back with a shrug.

“Is that the topic of the day? Lol,” Beal wrote.

He followed that up by defending Paul directly, making clear the number change wasn’t meant as any kind of slight against him.

“He’s a legend! The HISTORY and BRAND can’t be touched, nor erased!!!,” Bradley shared on X.

But the interesting part is that this isn’t even the first time Beal has shown just how much he understands the meaning behind the number. When Paul was set to return to the Clippers in 2025, Beal had already offered to give the No. 3 back to him. 

According to Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank, Beal volunteered the number as soon as he heard there was a possibility Paul was coming back to Los Angeles.

“Once Brad heard it’s a possibility Chris was coming he said, ‘I want to give him my number,’ and I don’t even think Chris knows this yet,” Frank said in 2025. “It’s awesome that Brad made such a great gesture like that.”

For sure it was a class A move, given Beal had worn No. 3 throughout his NBA career, but he was all willing to hand it over without a fight, something he is doing even now. And this is what makes the next part of the story more difficult to ignore.

Turns out just earlier this year, Paul revealed that Frank had personally told him that the Clippers planned to retire his No. 3, during the same conversation in which Paul was told his services were no longer needed.

“We all going to retire your jersey, but your service is no longer needed,” Paul recalled Frank telling him on the 7 PM in Brooklyn podcast in February.

What’s also worth noting is that the Clippers haven’t ever retired a jersey number. Add in the disrespect, and the backlash was huge. And all this comes amid a time when the Clippers have already gone through a pickle.

The NBA hit the franchise with a $30 million fine, suspended owner Steve Ballmer and president Lawrence Frank, and stripped the team of five future first-round picks after a year-long investigation into cap circumvention involving Kawhi Leonard. The Leonard trade to the Raptors still hasn’t even been finalized, months after it was verbally agreed to.

Now, a much smaller decision has caused almost as much noise.

This Isn’t the First Time a Franchise Has Strained a Legend’s Exit

The Clippers aren’t the first team to leave a legacy in limbo like this.

Kevin Garnett refused to let Minnesota retire his No. 21 for years after his own frosty split with the franchise, only agreeing to the ceremony after longtime owner Glen Taylor sold the team. That number is finally going up this coming season, more than a decade after Garnett’s playing career with the Timberwolves ended.

Why bring up Garnett here? Because it shows how long these rifts can actually last once a star player feels disrespected on the way out.

The Clippers, notably, are still the only franchise in the NBA with no retired numbers at all. Handing No. 3 to Beal now, so soon after Paul’s exit, makes it look even less likely that the gap closes anytime soon.
