Blue Moon, the first collaboration of Richard Linklaterand Ethan Hawkesince 2014’s Boyhood, begins with two telling quotes about American lyricist Lorenz Hart. The first, from Oscar Hammerstein II, stated that Hart was always fun to be around; however, the second quote, by Mabel Mercer, says that he was the “saddest man I ever knew.” It doesn’t take long into Blue Moon for us to understand that the latter quote is a far more apt explanation of the man, even if the former quote is the facade he tried to present to the world.
