Another game, another controversial call against the Toronto Blue Jays.
With two outs and the bases loaded, No. 1 hitter George Springer was looking to get his side on the board against the Boston Red Sox in the bottom of the second. Swinging on a 2-1 pitch, he lined it down the third-base line, only for the third-base umpire to emphatically rule it foul.
Springer and manager John Schneider — who walked onto the field in search of an explanation — were both appeared perplexed by the call, which was non-reviewable, and instant replay appeared to show the ball remained fair.
Springer was called out on strikes on the next pitch and made his way back to the dugout, incensed.
It’s the second time in two games that the Blue Jays have been on the wrong side of a controversial ruling.
With no outs and a runner on first in the bottom of the fifth inning in Sunday’s playoff-clinching victory, Bobby Witt Jr. hit a low, sinking line drive to centre that was nearly caught by a diving Daulton Varsho.
Upon review, Varsho appeared to snare the ball successfully before it touched the grass, however, the call on the field was upheld as no catch.
The Blue Jays went on to win the game 8-5 and punched their ticket to the post-season, but not without a bit of anxiety first. Their magic number to win their first division title since 2015 is four.
