Blade: Mahershala Ali Director Reveals What Positives He Got Out of the MCU Movie Experience

Marvel’s Blade taught its director some invaluable lessons. Those experiences have influenced his entire approach to filmmaking. Bassam Tariq reflected on those takeaways while discussing his time on the Mahershala Ali-led project.

While promoting his latest film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother in an interview with ComingSoon, he was asked about the positives he gained from Blade. The director said, “Kevin Feige taught me how to think big. I think for all of the things that people throw at them, the guy is phenomenal at, “Okay, how do we keep upping the ante? And I kept asking – or they call it “plussing.” I think that was the term that they would use. So I think a part of me was also thinking similarly, “How do we do that?””

He added, “The other plus, or the other thing that I took, was really audience and listening and hearing the audience. Whereas their testing has to be so careful because they have to keep everything so secretive, I was able to really test my movie with audiences and to really see where I needed to cut or where I needed to explain a little bit more, and how to make sure that the fights would land better and all these other things.”

Is the MCU Blade movie with Mahershala Ali ever happening?

The Mahershala Ali-led Blade project remains shelved after several years of development. Currently, Marvel Studios has no plans to bring this version into production.

Ali’s involvement dates back to 2019, when Marvel announced him as the star. Tariq joined the project as director in 2021, but his tenure ended the following year after production delays.

The project underwent more changes after Tariq’s exit, with Marvel continuing to work on its direction. By July 2026, Ali had confirmed that the movie was no longer moving forward.

As of now, Marvel has not revealed a new path for Ali’s Blade or announced another director for the project.
