Just one episode into The Gilded Ageseason 4, and Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) already has a huge secret. At the end of The Gilded Age season 3, Bertha was the toast of New York high society, having hosted a Newport Ball for the ages and triumphed over her greatest rival, Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy). However, Bertha's social climbing came at a great cost, as her husband, George (Morgan Spector), announced he was leaving her, unable to forgive Bertha for wedding their daughter, Gladys (Taissa Farmiga), off to Hector, Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb) without her consent.
