While Canadian sports romance drama Heated Rivalry has garnered immense praise since its release, series creator Jacob Tierney has said that he originally wanted to pitch the project to a US platform. According to Téléfilm Canada CEO and executive director Julie Roy, Tierney ultimately decided to collaborate with Canadian streaming giant Crave to adapt Rachel Reid’s Game Changers novels because it allowed him to have more creative freedom.
Julie Roy explains why Heated Rivalry wasn’t made on a US platform
In a recent interview, Julie Roy revealed that Heated Rivalry was originally going to be an American series. However, the explicit nature of the show convinced Jacob Tierney to take the idea to Crave.
“At first, it was supposed to be made with a US platform,” the veteran media executive explained, as per Variety. “But he didn’t have the freedom he wanted. For example, [they wanted] to have the first explicit scene only in episode five to tone down the romance.”
She added, “He decided to go back to Canada, and kudos to Crave, who had the courage to welcome the full project. For me, that’s a great example of not being Hollywood and being authentic. Authenticity is something that really works.”
Tierney’s decision has clearly paid off as Heated Rivalry has now become a pop-culture sensation. The raunchy series has not only received stellar reviews from critics but also from audiences. Heated Rivalry currently boasts a 96% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with an equally impressive Popcornmeter score of 88%.
Roy also shed light on the thriving creative scene of the Great White North, stating, “The diversity of Canada, the richness of its perspective, and storytellers is such a great asset. But it’s also an industry. It’s important to highlight that as well. In Canada, the economic impact of the creative industry is equivalent to aerospace industry, and it’s more than fisheries and automobile industry.”
Crave has already renewed Heated Rivalry for Season 2, which could premiere sometime during the spring of 2027.
