Grab your magnifying glass and don the deerstalker hat – Only Murders in the Building has returned for a new season.

The hit Disney+ series stars Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez as three flatblock residents – Oliver, Charles and Mabel – turned amateur detectives.

The show has had a revolving list of star-studded talent come in and out, from Meryl Streep to Logan Lerman who plays Jay Pflug, a pharma nepo baby. Renée Zellweger, Christoph Waltz and Beanie Feldstein also appear in the new season.

In the season four finale, viewers were dealt a brutal blow when Lester (Teddy Coluca), the Arconia’s doorman, was found dead in the fountain in front of the titular building – The Arconia.

As such, we jump headfirst into the action as our plucky cluefinders try to solve yet another mystery instead of finally taking it as a sign to move home).

Although that may be tricky, considering their various murder-related escapades have got them caught up with the mob (hence a severed finger is delivered to Oliver in some shrimp).

The first three episodes of the fifth season premiered on Disney Plus on Tuesday, with new episodes dropping weekly. So, whether you are planning to get into the show for the first time or have been eagerly awaiting its return, there’s plenty to catch up on.

And the new season has already made quite the impression on fans.

‘Only Murders in the Building might actually be the best thing TV has ever given us,’ @_martremblay wrote on X.

‘The way they add layers and truly make you feel for the victim of the season is masterful,’ @grondhogjay_ praised.

‘Only Murders in the Building is deeply unserious, I love it,’ teamdeckerstar shared.

Across five seasons, the murder mystery series has averaged a whopping 96% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score, with season five happily securing the same.

‘It feels like a show that could run forever, even though it can’t. For now, just enjoy the ride,’ New York Magazine wrote.

‘Martin and Short’s physical comedy skills remain unparalleled, while Gomez’s performance is fascinatingly off-kilter. Together they are a delight. Long may people continue to die horribly at The Arconia,’ Financial Times echoed.

After a couple of seasons that have flung our protagonists far-and-wide, the show is returning to a building-centred mystery, which was a very intentional choice.

Showrunner John Hoffman told Variety: ‘Each season, we’re trying to figure out what new aspect of New York we can look into.

‘It felt to me like the show was ready for a return to its roots, bringing it home to the building itself more specifically than it had been for a few seasons. Lester, and Teddy Coluca who plays him, has a quintessentially New York vibe and a quintessentially New York occupation.’

Only Murders in the Building seasons one to four are available to watch on Disney+ (with season one also on ITVX). The first three episodes of season five are out now with new ones dropping every Tuesday.
