Filmmakers will always draw inspiration from works of literature, existing films, and other forms of media, but the Internet has altered the relationship between audiences and storytelling. Although social media has inspired more than a few wild tall tales, Zolawas a gleefully black comedy based on a viral Twitter thread. Although it was always going to be hard to capture the same stunned disbelief that social media viewers had when following the story in real time, Zola is just as unpredictable, sickening, and surprisingly hilarious as it needed to be. Although it was an underrated film filled with great performances, Taylour Paigeearned her breakout role as the film’s titular character.
