Baldur’s Gate 3 celebrates the concurrent player numbers for the 2023 Game of the Year on Steam, which is enjoying a second wind thanks to mods and Patch 8.
Baldur’s Gate 3 — Mods and Patch 8 Revive the Community
It’s hard to believe Baldur’s Gate 3 is nearing its second anniversary. Many remember their first adventure in Larian Studios’ RPG like it was yesterday—but that final version launched back in August 2023 on Steam and GOG.
Since then, the game has seen massive success including its GOTY win, driven by continuous content updates. One of the most notable additions has been full mod support.

That said, the Baldur’s Gate 3 community is especially thrilled with Patch 8, released just a few days ago. It brings tons of new features, from photo mode and cross-play to split-screen on Xbox Series S, 12 new subclasses, and much more.
Many players are returning to Faerûn to experience all the updates, and the numbers on SteamDB (the unofficial Steam database) prove it.
Currently, there are 118,690 players in-game, and in the last 24 hours, the peak hit 152,592 concurrent players — and that’s just on Steam, excluding console users and those on other PC platforms like GOG.
While this is far from the all-time peak of over 875,000 players, it’s still an impressive resurgence. And the game’s director is thriller.
Larian Studios Has Faith in the Future of Baldur’s Gate 3
This isn’t a live-service title, so it’s even more impressive that such a deep RPG like Baldur’s Gate 3 is pulling in these numbers nearly two years after release. The credit goes to the steady stream of updates and improvements.

Swen Vincke, the game’s director, shared a heartfelt message with fans, thanking them for their continued support over the past months. He also spoke optimistically about the RPG’s future:
“Today, I feel good about where BG3 is. Patch 8 brought a lot of players back. It took a huge amount of development work, but I’m glad we pulled it off.”
You can now download Patch 8 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, and see for yourself how much new content has been added—starting with the 12 new subclasses you can now choose for your characters.
“With the growing support for mods, I believe the game will continue to do well for quite a while. That gives us breathing room to focus on making our next big project the best it can be, and that shift is more than welcome. We’ve got a big challenge ahead.”
Vincke is confident that mods and Patch 8’s content will sustain the game’s popularity for the foreseeable future. That’s exactly what Larian was aiming for, especially as the studio is now focused on its next two projects—both of which move away from the Wizards of the Coast IP.
