Channing Tatum recently opened up about shaping Gambit’s voice for Avengers: Doomsday. In a new interview at the Toronto International Film Festival, he explained why the accent needed adjustments after his debut in Deadpool & Wolverine. He also detailed how he balanced authenticity with clarity for Marvel’s ensemble film.
Channing Tatum details Gambit’s changed accent for Avengers: Doomsday
Channing Tatum explained that the character’s voice would differ from the thick Louisiana drawl he used in Deadpool & Wolverine. “The accent’s a tough one,” Tatum told Entertainment Weekly.
“It’s hard to explain that to someone that isn’t from the South, isn’t from Louisiana. My dad’s from New Orleans. I’ve been around,” the actor said. “That accent has a big spectrum. You cannot understand ‘em at all, and you can understand ‘em at times. So you have to really play with it.”
Tatum said he needed to demonstrate that the character’s voice could still carry comedic and dramatic weight while delivering necessary exposition. “There’s a lot of exposition that has to happen in those movies, and you can even do that,” he said.
The Magic Mike star added, “It’s been a strange but really gratifying thing. When you’re trying to shove a square peg for so long and then finally it just goes [through], then you’re like, ‘Yes! Alright! Cool. We’re off and running now.’”
The actor’s history with Gambit extends back to 2015, when he was announced as the star of a planned solo film under 20th Century Fox. That project stalled after Disney acquired the studio and its X-Men rights.
Tatum credited Ryan Reynolds with helping convince Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige that he could successfully bring the character to life. “When [Reynolds] put me in Deadpool, it just cracked it open,” Tatum remarked.
He first appeared as Gambit in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, marking his long-awaited debut in the role. Following the film’s global success, Reynolds told Entertainment Weekly that Marvel had become “obsessed with [Tatum] in that role.”
On March 26, 2025, Marvel confirmed Gambit’s return in Avengers: Doomsday. Tatum also confirmed that he still has more scenes left to film for the ensemble event.
