Army Corps of Engineers launches 16-week renourishment project for Duval County beaches

The Army Corps of Engineers will kick off a months-long beach renourishment project at a 10 a.m. news conference in Jacksonville Beach.

The project will cover nearly 10 miles of Atlantic, Neptune and Jacksonville beaches down to the Duval-St. Johns County line.

A graphic released by the Army Corps of Engineers shows which sections of the beach will be affected each week during the 16-week project.

Plan for Duval County beaches renourishment project

Week 1 starts between 10th Avenue South and 16th Avenue. Crews will then move south through the third week, to the county line.

Then the project moves north to near Beach Boulevard the week of May 19.

The project will reach all the way to the Naval base by August.

This is the first major renourishment project for Duval County beaches since 2017 and is 100% federally funded.

Crews have already brought in some of the heavy machinery they will use to bring in sand from off shore to fill in weak spots along the coast.

They will also build up dunes.

The goal is to address erosion caused by tropical storms Ian and Nicole.
