Anthony Santander took another step in his rehab assignment on Wednesday, lining up defensively for the first time with triple-A Buffalo.

The 30-year-old played left field for the Bisons as they continued their series against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, but didn’t get a flyball before he was subbed out in the top of the eighth.

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters in Tampa on Wednesday that the team plans to “reassess a little bit, see how he’s feeling,” after his return to the field, per Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi.

“He knows he needs to feel 100 per cent and feel like himself physically, feel like himself performance-wise.”

At the plate, Santander went 0-for-4 in the game with two groundouts and two flyouts.

After homering in the first game with Buffalo, Santander has struggled to find consistent results with the bat. He is now 4-for-22 on his rehab stint with the homer, a double, four walks and six strikeouts.

He was Buffalo’s designated hitter through his first five rehab games.

Toronto’s major off-season addition has been out of the MLB lineup with a shoulder injury since May 29.

Before hitting the injured list, Santander was slashing .179/.273/.304 with six homers in 50 games for the Blue Jays. He had mostly served as Toronto’s designated hitter, but also spent time defensively in left and right field and at first base.

Buffalo now has four games remaining in its season, as it wraps up the year against the RailRiders.
