We’ll admit that we were a little surprised to learn that it had taken until now for two modern-day screen legends like Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett to finally star in a movie together.

The pair play a married couple with secrets in the new erotic thriller Verity, which marks the fifth Anne Hathaway film to hit cinemas in 2026.

Speaking to HuffPost UK at the film’s London premiere last week, Josh agreed: “It is surprising we’ve never worked together – but there was one thing we came very close to doing together years and years and years ago.”

However, sadly, he chose not to share any more details.

“I can’t,” he claimed. “It’s one of those things… every time I say that I didn’t do a film, people are like, ‘oh, well that actor [wasn’t the first choice]’. It’s just not nice.”

“And I would feel bad if some other actor came out [and said they’d turned down a role I played],” Josh added. “I’ve had that before, where they’ve come out and been like, ‘I almost did that role!’. And I’m like, ‘hmm… I guess I was the second choice’.”

Based on the Colleen Hoover novel of the same name, Verity centres around a successful author who finds herself unable to finish her most popular book series after an accident leaves her physically incapacitated.

Seemingly to help things along, her husband brings in another writer – played by Dakota Johnson – to finish his wife’s work, only for her to wind up being drawn into the couple’s dark and mysterious world.

Before Verity, this year had already seen Anne playing lead roles in the musical thriller Mother Mary, the long-awaited sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey and the family adventure The End Of Oak Street – with another movie already in post-production ahead of its 2027 release.

Verity is in cinemas now.
