Anna Wintour has remained tight-lipped whenever people compared her to Miranda Priestly, the icy editor played by Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. Now, the fashion icon has finally opened up about what she truly thinks of the 2006 blockbuster and Streep’s iconic performance.

Anna Wintour enjoyed The Devil Wears Prada, thinks Meryl Streep was ‘fantastic’ in it

Speaking on The New Yorker Radio Hour podcast, the former Vogue editor-in-chief recalled how she attended the premiere “wearing Prada” with no clue what the movie was about. “The fashion industry were very sweetly concerned for me about the film, that it was going to paint me in some kind of difficult light,” Wintour admitted. When host David Remnick suggested that the film showed her as “cartoonish,” Wintour agreed it was “a caricature.”

But instead of taking offense, she was pleasantly surprised. “First of all, it was Meryl Streep, which, fantastic,” Wintour said. “And then I went to see the film, and I found it highly enjoyable. It was very funny.” She praised the cast, adding, “[It] had a lot of humor to it. It had a lot of wit. It had Meryl Streep. I mean, it was Emily Blunt… they were all amazing. In the end, I thought it was a fair shot.”

Over the years, Wintour has been asked repeatedly whether she sees herself in Miranda Priestly. Typically, she brushed off the comparisons. Last year, she told the BBC at the gala for the Prada musical, “[It’s] for the audience and for the people I work with to decide if there are any similarities between me and Miranda Priestly.”

Now, the story isn’t over. The Devil Wears Prada 2 is officially in development. Recently, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci were spotted working on it. Meanwhile, Wintour stepped down as Vogue’s U.S. editor-in-chief in June.
