The Day 1 Foursome session saw some shocking and unexpected golf on the course of Bethpage Black. Favorites to win, Team USA fell flat to Team Europe with a score of 3-1, with notable players such as Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau struggling in their rounds. Now this was not anticipated, as the home team does get a lot of crowd support. And if the crowd is made up of New Yorkers, the heat will be high. The burden that Robert MacIntyre faced.
Down the course, Team Europe managed to scrape through a dominant victory, with the only loss of a point coming from the duo of MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland. The duo faced the wrath of Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, who led their team with a score of 2 up. Now, most of the credit for this should go to Cantlay-Schauffele’s solid partnership, but the crowd at Bethpage Black played a role in it. As MacIntyre was going to make a putt at the 17th hole, someone from the crowd yelled and called him a “w*nker”, in a forced Scottish accent. Losing his attention, MacIntyre missed the putt.
Wonder if the so-called “zero tolerance” approach to crowd misbehaviour will be seen on 17 there. Couldn’t tell on TV but clearly MacIntyre had to back off tee shot.

This led to the loss of the duo by 1 down. The New York crowd is infamous for its notorious nature. Before this, when the European team stepped onto the course, the New Yorkers went ahead and loudly booed the bunch. And after their treatment of MacIntyre, many on X expressed their displeasure. One user said, “These yanks have no class.”
This is a developing story…
