The creators have revealed that they had already worked on scripts for a potential fourth season before deciding to step away from the series. While there is no confirmed return yet, their comments suggest that another season remains a possibility.

Smiling Friends could eventually return, despite its third season being presented as the end of the Adult Swim animated series. Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel have now indicated that they have not completely ruled out continuing the show, offering some hope to fans who were disappointed by its conclusion.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cusack confirmed that draft scripts for Season 4 still exist and could be revisited in the future. “We had scripts ready for season four, even if it was draft-y. In a few years, if Zach and I feel like making the show again, we’ll dig them out and see if they’re worth making or if we want to start fresh again,” he said.

Hadel also suggested that the chances of a revival cannot be ruled out. When asked about the likelihood of another season being produced, he initially suggested it could be around 25 or 30 percent. He later explained that his answer changes depending on the day. “Can we say this? Some days, it’s 80. Some days, it’s 20. It really does change day to day. But it’s not zero,” he said.

The uncertainty follows the creators’ decision to end Smiling Friends after Season 3 despite Adult Swim previously renewing the series for two additional seasons. Cusack and Hadel had said they were experiencing burnout, which contributed to their decision to stop rather than continue immediately with the planned seasons.

For now, there is no confirmed Season 4. However, the creators’ existing scripts and their comments about potentially returning suggest that the door has not been completely closed on Smiling Friends.
