If you take a second and note what comes to mind when you hear the phrase “Best Picture” winner, it’s probably not a fantasy, sci-fi, or horror movie. Historically, the Academy Awards have avoided giving the top prize every year to a movie that belongs to one of these genres, and that’s a reason why “Oscar bait” films are often ones that tell some kind of historical story, focusing on things inspired by real events, or are straightforward biopics. Not all Oscar bait is bad, though, and not all historical dramas that win Academy Awards are necessarily Oscar bait. Oppenheimer, for a relatively recent example, did feel a bit more challenging, unique, and risky than more typical movies about real-life events. Compared to Oppenheimer, Oscar contenders like Darkest Hour and The King’s Speech (the latter being a Best Picture winner) were set during a similar time in history and felt safer overall.
