Akon's wife Tomeka Thiam has made the big decision to file for divorce, ending the 29-year-old marriage. According to media reports, she claimed irreconcilable differences as the reason behind the divorce. In the divorce, Thiam marked the couple's date of separation as TBD and revealed that they share one child, a 17-year-old daughter, Journey. Media reports have also stated that she has requested joint legal custody of their daughter but has asked for primary physical custody, with Akon, 52, granted visitation rights.
Thiam has also requested spousal support for herself while requesting that the court deny any such support to the singer. The most shocking part of this news is that the separation came days before their 29th anniversary.
The global music icon has topped charts and been in the headlines not just for his music but also for his incredibly complex love life. Over the years, Akon has often admitted to being in multiple relationships. He has been with multiple women and even fathered children with more than one partner. Even after this approach, he has often maintained that honesty and responsibility define his relationships.
The Chammak Challo singer has been pretty open about his views on polygamy and family. In a 2022 interview, Akon shocked the audience when he revealed that he had 9 children, and he also shared that he considers his lifestyle a natural extension of his cultural roots.
What are his thoughts on polygamy?
"(Polygamy is) part of our culture. Absolutely," he said, explaining, "For me, it looks normal because it's a culture for us. We didn't go outside of our African culture when we got to the Western world. The flaw that the Western world made is that they created all these rules without putting nature into account."
