Abbott Elementary’s Sheryl Lee Ralph Apologizes for Comment About Other Emmy Nominees

Emmy-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph has apologized for comments she made about the other nominees. The apology comes as she promotes Abbott Elementary ahead of the Primetime Emmy Awards. 

Initially, the actress drew criticism after describing the ABC sitcom as the “only real comedy” in the Outstanding Comedy Series category. During E! News’ red carpet coverage, Ralph praised her Abbott Elementary co-stars before saying, “I’m looking forward to a win since we’re the only real comedy in the category.” 

Her comment quickly spread online and sparked criticism for appearing to dismiss the other shows competing for the award. Ralph later addressed the negative reaction and apologized for her choice of words.

“I want to sincerely apologize for my choice of words in some interviews yesterday on the Emmy red carpet,” she said. 

The actress explained that she intended to celebrate the work of the Abbott Elementary cast and crew, rather than diminish other performers or series. 

“My intention was to celebrate what we’ve built and never to diminish anyone else. But intention doesn’t erase impact, and I understand how my words sounded dismissive. For that, I am truly sorry,” Ralph added.

Did Abbott Elementary win any Emmys at this year’s awards ceremony?

Abbott Elementary did not win an Emmy at this year’s ceremony. The series competed against The Bear, Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking, Nobody Wants This, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, and Widow’s Bay in the Outstanding Comedy Series category.

Widow’s Bay emerged as the night’s most-awarded comedy winner, taking home 14 Emmy awards. Meanwhile, Abbott Elementary missed out on adding another trophy to its collection.

Ralph remains one of the show’s most celebrated stars. She won the 2022 Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Barbara Howard, the veteran teacher at Abbott Elementary. 

Created by and starring Quinta Brunson, the series has become one of ABC’s most successful modern comedy series and continues to attract strong critical attention.
