Jonathan Goldstein, one of the co-writers/co-directors on “Game Night” alongside John Francis Daley, says a sequel to one of their most well-received works was briefly in serious development.
That film was “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” the 2023 film adaptation of the long-running tabletop game franchise, which grossed an underwhelming $208 million worldwide on an estimated $150 million production budget.
Despite that, the film was well-received by critics and audiences, scoring praise for its cast, direction, visual effects, writing, score, humour, and tone. Originally, Paramount Pictures, Hasbro and Entertainment One had hopes for a franchise, but that wasn’t to happen.
How far did they get along with those plans? Speaking with Screen Rant at Comic-Con, Goldstein revealed that a script was actually done:
“We actually wrote a sequel to ‘Dungeons & Dragons.’ We were hired to write it. I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons. They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like.”
Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, Justice Smith and Sophia Lillis co-starred in the film, which follows an unlikely band of heroes who must work together to find a lost relic.
Goldstein and Daley will next direct action thriller “Renegades” and are developing the next “Star Trek” film for Paramount.
